GFA U13 Premier League
Cregmore / Claregalway 1 - 2 Kiltullagh Pioneers (Oscar O’Gorman, Tom Daly)
The 13s played in Baltic conditions in Cregmore this afternoon and came away with a hard fought win over a dogged Cregmore side.
It was almost a classic game of two halves because of the “beast of the east” blowing hard down the pitch, but the Pioneers probably just about deserved their narrow win.
Playing with the wind in the first half we had multiple chances with Tom Daly, Oscar O’Gorman, Jack Earls and Danny Keane all coming close from shots, crosses and headers, while the Cregmore ‘keeper was sound in all situations and the hosts defended very well.
The breakthrough came right on the stroke of half time from a counter attack, after a Cregmore short free went astray, Tom went on an excellent run down the left and having arrived in the box, found Oscar who scored brilliantly high into the net.
Michael Walsh was outstanding in defence early in the second half and while we had a couple of breakout chances, it was mainly Cregmore pressure.
The defence was resolute with the returning Paddy MacCarthaigh battling hard as always on the left. Pierce McGurk had a shot on 49’ while Danny had a number of chances but just couldn’t find the net.
Our second came on 52’ thanks to another excellent JOB free kick over the top that was chased down by Tom and buried in the top corner.
JOB was then flattened in midfield and had to go off temporarily with a nasty knock to the ribs. Oscar also shipped a heavy knock which left him holding his right arm for the rest of the game.
The Pioneers had to reorganize and it didn’t help then with a number of players shuffled around in different positions.
Cregmore kept playing and got their reward in injury time with a fine goal.
It was all the home side at this stage and only a brilliant Cormac Cooney save deep into injury time kept the Pioneers ahead.
There were gentle reminders to the ref that time was up after over 5 minutes of injury time, but it was the Pioneers who were on the attack when the final whistle went.
A good win and 3 points hard earned.
